Spotlight: Berghain by ROSALÍA

Ah yes, “Berghain.” My favorite song named for a nightclub I’ve been stoically rejected by.

As an avid sci-fi fan and amateur music enthusiast, every year I wait patiently for humanity’s pop stars to finally start sounding as cosmically epic as that blue lady from The Fifth Element. With Rosalía’s LUX, I’m ecstatic to announce we’re finally getting close.

“Berghain” is the first single from said album, and it really puts the “lux” in LUX. It feels like upgrading to Music Premium after listening to chronically unambitious artists for your whole life. It’s a big song that does big things. You know the sonic palette is massive when the London Symphony Orchestra, Yves Tumor, and fucking Björk – who emerges from the ether to sing 3 lines about divine intervention then slinks back from whence the came – are on the features list. And you know Rosalía is an otherworldly star because none of them come close to upstaging her. Her stunning voice cuts through a song brimming with other talent. Virtuoso violinists and cutting-edge experimentalists don’t hold a candle to Rosalía these days. She bounces between German opera and cinematic flamenco with the ease of . . . that blue lady from the Fifth Element.

Classical music has scarcely sounded so club worthy, and club worthy music has scarcely sounded so much like High Art. “Berghain” is an exhilarating rush toward past and future at once. Refined but raunchy. Sweeping but introspective. With only a couple days left of 2025, I can confidently say this is my final “favorite song” of the year. Do yourself a favor and give it a listen in the same year as its release. (The music video is a fever dream as well)
